A range of events are held in Hamilton, from international events to school fairs. Events have a lot of benefits for the city. They increase the number of tourists and amount of money spent at local businesses and contribute to the overall vibrancy of the city.
But events can also have a lot of negative impacts. Some events are noisy, others generate increases in traffic and parking.
What do you think the best areas are for staging events in Hamilton? What areas can handle events? What areas can't?

This bottom line is that events should have some tangible and lasting benefits for the city as a whole and should be able to stand on their own rather than be ratepayer funded. Develop some standard criteria to sum up the city's expectations from events. Focus on improving the visitor experiene as well as day to day quality of life for Hamilton residents. Location is less important and is related to the scale of the event, as well as the extent of disruption to the city landscape and liveability.

This questions seems to assume that this is a giventhat we will keep oing after events
Balloons is great, V8's great, Fieldays Great but here are many other lower profile things that really engage communities. eg napier has many age group football tournaments because they have a fantastic venue developed by someone with great vision - our gardens probably get into this category and any weekend and most weekdays you will see the car park at least half full with our average tourist and many locals - i am a dog runner and love the place with the river, trees more…

Really interesting comments on the public space you are enjoying using. Check out the Public Spaces forum. (www.fastforwardhamilton.co.nz/publicspace) Be great to hear more about what people think about the spaces they are enjoying using in the city or what they think is lacking. Council agrees the River could be made more of. What other public spaces do people think the city needs to have or use better?

Thanks for you comments. Location is definitely important when in comes to staging events as some areas can cope better for different types of events – for example the audience and needs of small community based events makes them more suited in the suburbs.
Local tourism could be promoted through the District Plan, as could better use of the River. You can see the idea for a River Precinct laid out visually in page 6 of Big Picture - Full Discussion Document (paste this link into your browser to check it out: http://fastforwardhamilton.co.nz/document/show/2 ). On page 45 of the same document there is an easy to read short discussion on that potential of the River Precinct and what Council could do.

We have some great events, and some that are causing considerable pain. Balloons over Waikato and the Fieldays are generally positive and enjoyable, probably because the Balloons only cause major disruption on one evening, and this is more than compensated for by the wonderful spectacle they produce all over the city, while the Fieldays are located well out of town and the traffic jams can be avoided by most people who don't want to become entangled in them! The V8s are a different kettle of fish and cause a great deal of inner city disruption over many weeks. Using business more…

Maybe a possible venue for concerts or events could be off Avalon Drive, somewhere near the Avalon Polytech, The Base and the future railroad station that will be built there. It's a commercial area close to the city centre with easy access by car or rail.
